OpenAI has released its latest language model, GPT-4, and claims it to be much better than its predecessor, GPT-3.5, which is available on ChatGPT. The new model comes with significant upgrades and improvements, and OpenAI has locked it behind a paywall – the ChatGPT Plus subscription – for now. In this article, we’ll delve into the differences between GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 and explore their capabilities.
Both GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 are natural language models used by OpenAI’s ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence chatbots to craft human-like interactions. They are both capable of passing complicated Bar exams, and can write in the style of any writer with publicly available work. However, GPT-4 is the newer of the two models and is based on a lot more training data, which makes it more accurate and less prone to “hallucinations” than GPT-3.5.
Depending on the prompt it receives, GPT-3.5 can take into account 175 billion parameters thanks to the data it was trained on. In contrast, GPT-4 is ultimately capable of taking into account nearly 1 trillion parameters. Beyond GPT-3.5, GPT-4 was trained for an additional six months with input from humans and AI, which provided it with a wealth of additional corrections and recommendations for how to get better. Additionally, GPT-4’s responses are more up-to-date because it was trained on more recent data through September 2021.
GPT-4 incorporates many new safeguards that OpenAI put in place to make it less prone to delivering responses that could be considered harmful or illegal. OpenAI claims that GPT-4 is “82% less likely to respond to requests for disallowed content.” The model is more capable of understanding prompts with multiple factors to consider, and it can retain more information from conversations, improving its responses based on context.
In comparison to GPT-3.5, which has a context window of about 3,000 words, GPT-4 has a context window of almost 25,000 words. Due to the enhanced context window, GPT-4 does not answer as quickly as GPT-3.5, which normally responds within a few seconds. Compared to GPT-3.5, which frequently lost its path or made absurd recommendations for characters that would be either physically or canonically impossible, GPT-4’s creative attempts are considerably more convincing and logical..
GPT-3.5 is fully available as part of ChatGPT, on the OpenAI website. Users need an account to log in, but it is entirely free. GPT-4 is available through the ChatGPT Plus subscription, which costs $20 a month, and offers priority access to ChatGPT. However, there are some ways to use GPT-4 for free, such as through Bing Chat. Nevertheless, these sources tend to have a limited number of questions, or do not always use GPT-4 due to limited availability.
GPT-4, with its improved ability to retain knowledge from chats and its ability to produce nuanced, correct, and less hallucinatory responses, is, in summary, a major improvement over GPT-3.5. Users must decide whether a ChatGPT Plus subscription is pricey or whether using GPT-3.5 for free is preferable.
